Industrial Bearing Inspection & Custom Babbitt Bearing Manufacturing
In high-velocity rotating machinery, rolling-element bearings often cannot survive the extreme loads, high surface speeds, and intense thermal conditions. Instead, critical industrial infrastructure relies on hydrodynamic journal and thrust bearings—commonly known as Babbitt bearings. These components allow high-speed shafts to float on a microscopic, pressurized film of oil. When a Babbitt bearing wears down, scores, or suffers bond separation, it threatens the stability of your entire machine assembly. Washington Iron Works delivers comprehensive bearing inspection, precision re-Babbitting, centrifugal casting, and custom bearing manufacturing engineered to protect your high-value rotodynamic assets.

Precision Centrifugal Casting and NDT Validation for Hydrodynamic Bearings
Hydrodynamic journal bearings are the silent protectors of multi-million dollar industrial infrastructure, including steam turbines, massive electric motors, large compressors, and heavy-duty industrial gearboxes. Within these advanced rotational systems, the soft, tin- or lead-based Babbitt alloy lining must be perfectly bonded to a rigid steel, bronze, or cast iron backing shell. Any microscopic pocket of air, structural impurity, or chemical contamination during the casting process will disrupt heat dissipation, leading to premature lining fatigue, wiping, and catastrophic shaft destruction.
Our specialized bearing division utilizes a meticulous, data-driven approach to bearing restoration and new component manufacturing. We combine advanced static and centrifugal casting methods with climate-controlled pouring environments to ensure a flawless, fine-grain metallurgical structure. We don’t just pour metal; we manage the exact thermal boundaries and chemical preparation steps required to create an unbreakable molecular bond between the Babbitt lining and the host shell. Every bearing we manufacture or repair undergoes rigorous non-destructive testing (NDT), ensuring your high-load rotating machinery operates with absolute stability and maximum fluid-film reliability.

Our Bearing Inspection & Manufacturing Capabilities
Operating out of our high-precision manufacturing facilities, our technicians utilize specialized machining tools, advanced casting equipment, and strict quality-control instrumentation.
Custom Centrifugal Babbitt Casting
While static pouring is acceptable for simple configurations, our shop specializes in centrifugal casting for cylindrical journal bearings. By spinning the bearing backing shell at high speeds while introducing molten Babbitt alloy, centrifugal force drives out lighter impurities and air pockets.
- The Benefit: This process yields an incredibly dense, uniform, and void-free metal structure with superior bond strength and exceptional resistance to wear and fatigue.
Precision
Re-Babbitting & Mechanical Repair
When an existing bearing is worn but the backing shell is structurally sound, complete replacement is unnecessary. Our re-Babbitting service fully restores your high-value assets at a fraction of the cost of a new OEM component.
- Our Process: We thermally melt away the old, worn alloy, chemically clean and grit-blast the backing shell down to pristine metal, re-tin the bonding surface, cast a fresh layer of premium virgin Babbitt, and precision-machine the internal oil clearances back to factory specifications.
Ultrasonic Bond Testing (UT) &
NDT Inspection
We back our casting craftsmanship with advanced quality assurance. Every bearing undergoes rigorous visual and dimensional checks, alongside high-resolution ultrasonic bond testing (UT) in accordance with industry standards.
- The Benefit: Ultrasonic inspection allows our certified technicians to look deep inside the material interface, confirming that the Babbitt layer achieved 100% molecular bond continuity with the backing shell before the component leaves our shop floor.
Custom Oil Groove & Clearance Machining
Proper hydrodynamic lubrication requires highly specific fluid paths. Our precision machinists utilize specialized horizontal and vertical mills to machine intricate internal oil grooves, thrust faces, mud pockets, and anti-rotation pin paths tailored exactly to your machine’s lubrication dynamics.
